Two of the five men arrested on Sunday night for harboring a fugitive, have been released by the Criminal Court on Monday afternoon.

The five men were initially arrested under a court order, the Maldives Police Service said.

The court today released two of the individuals who were allegedly harbouring Faih, while the remaining three were remanded for 15 days.

Reportedly, one of the men who were arrested was local football player Abdullah Junaid who plays for Maziya Sports Club. He was arrested right after the final match of a tournament he was playing in. According to sources, the police had waited until he finished his match, but he was taken into custody before the awarding ceremony.

The man in hiding was Ibrahim Faih Nazim, 25, from the Maradhoo-Feydhoo ward of Addu City. The police wanted him in connection with a case of assault involving a sharp object that occurred in a cafe in Malé on January 14.

The police sought public assistance for his search on February 15.

The police said they were still investigating the matter and did not reveal any further details.

There has been a recent increase in gang-related violence and organised crime, especially in Malé city. The police have elevated their operations in an effort to counter these crimes.
