Adhaalath Party's Leader Imran Abdullah has criticised the Maldivian Democratic Party's (MDP) President and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, saying losing does not mean one has to change their beliefs frequently.

Imran, who is also the Minister of Home Affairs, tweeted on Saturday some supposed advice that said that remaining consistent and being earnest in political work is the way to achieve good results.

The tweet went on to say, "failure does not mean you have to change your beliefs quickly."

The tweet comes at a time when Nasheed has expressed interest in forming a coalition for the upcoming presidential election, despite the fact that he lost MDP's primary election held this January.

Prior to the primary, Nasheed had said that MDP could win the election on its own and that there would be no need to form coalitions. He even criticised President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for his plan to move forward with the ruling coalition in this election.

However, last week, Nasheed and his allies began talks of a potential coalition with other parties.

West Henveiru MP Hassan Latheef, a close associate of Nasheed, asked about the possibility of a political leader from another party contesting in the election with an MDP running mate, during a parliament sitting last week.

There has been speculation that Nasheed is attempting to form an alliance with the Jumhooree Party (JP). Nasheed has not commented on these allegations; however, JP leader Qasim Ibrahim said on Wednesday that the party had not received such a proposal yet.

At a parliament sitting last week, Nasheed highlighted that MDP does not have the majority in the incumbent government.

"As you know, MDP currently holds 40 percent of the government. If the party gets more than that, it can only be assumed that it is going to be a good thing," Nasheed said.

Adhaalath Party was the first to confirm its support for President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih after he extended an invitation to all the coalition partners to move forward together to secure a second term of office. The party cited President Solih's willingness to cooperate in creating a manifesto and his ability to work alongside a coalition among its reasons for the decision.

The Elections Commission announced that the presidential election will be held on September 9.
