Tourist arrivals declined, bed-nights surged in September 2022

According to Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) tourist arrivals declined by 3 percent in September 2022, when compared with the same month last year.

Central bank statistics further confirm bed-nights increased by seven percent when compared with the corresponding month in 2021. Similarly, when compared with the pre-pandemic levels of September 2019, tourist arrivals declined by 5 percent, while bed-nights rose by 12 percent.

Total tourist arrivals for September 2022 was recorded at 111,986.

MMA reports this annual decline in tourist arrivals "largely reflected the decrease (of 27,767) in arrivals from India" owing to the higher base effect of a surge in arrivals in September 2021. Despite this, total tourist arrivals from main source markets remained "robust" in September 2022, while arrivals from Russia, India, UK, Germany and USA remained among the top source market rankings.

Operational bed capacity of tourism industry observed an increment of 7,437 beds in the review month, when compared with September 2021. On the other hand, occupancy rate dipped to 45 percent in the review month from 48 percent in the corresponding month last year.

Statistics also confirm that tourist arrivals from January to September 2022 increased by 37 percent in annual terms, while bed-nights rose by 32 percent. However, when compared with the same period in 2019, tourist arrivals declined by 5 percent, while bed-nights grew by only 15 percent.

During the period, the average stay declined from 9 days in 2021 to 8.2 days for the same period in 2022.
