Dengue, on Tuesday, claimed the life of a nine-year-old minor, the first confirmed victim of the mosquito-borne virus in the country within 2019.

The victim, which was identified as a lifelong thalassaemic patient, succumbed to the disease while undergoing treatment at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGHM), in capital city Male'.

According to the Health Protection Agency's statistics released earlier this July for the month of June, there were a total of 7,129 cases of viral fever last month, higher than the statistics for June 2018.

The highest numbers of reported cases were from the atolls of Vaavu, Alif Dhaalu and Meemu, with a ratio of 1,000 out of 10,000 people contracting the fever in Vaavu.

The agency revealed that 33 cases of dengue were reported in June.

HPA frequently urges precautions against mosquitoes, such as abolishing or emptying out spots in and around households where stagnant water accumulates, keeping roads and neighbourhoods clean, properly covering dustbins and trashcans, using repellents, and closing inlets within the household during the sunrise and sunset period to prevent mosquitoes from entering.
