Over 200 people have tested positive for swine flu amidst the viral flu epidemic spreading across the Maldives, according to the Health Protection Agency (HPA).

The agency’s latest report released Wednesday shows that total 619 people have tested for swine flu by then, out of which 222 tested positive. Currently 20 people are hospitalised for further treatment while 10 patients were discharged over Monday and Tuesday.

The previous report released Monday stated that 199 people had tested positive for the H1N1 virus, thus indicating their number had increased by 23 over 48 hours.

HPA’s statistics show an increasing decline in the number of people seeking doctors’ consultation for flu and colds.

Six people have died from swine flu so far.

The Maldives government has also closed schools again for the remainder of this week after temporarily resuming classes on Sunday and Monday. However, the majority of parents did not send their children to school for fear of contracting the uncontrolled swine flu.
