The swimming track in the southern waterfront of capital Male has been reopened to the public after it was temporarily closed down for dredging, announced Swimming Association of Maldives on Monday.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports had requested the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure to dredge BML Male Swimming Track back to its original depth profile, following complaints over lack of depth, sand encroachment and trash.
The track was closed down in early May and the housing ministry has dredged the track back to a depth varying between 2.5 to 3.5 metres.
The Swimming Association further revealed that the two swimming platforms were also repaired, and thanked Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) for their extensive assistance. The association also expressed gratitude to the other involved institutions and individuals for their cooperation.
BML Male Swimming Track had been temporarily closed down several times in the past, notably due to accumulation of trash. It is the only area available for athletes in the capital city, which had long lost its natural beaches to coastal reinforcement and land reclamation, while Male's two artificial beaches are too shallow for competitive swimming.
