Aishath Sajina, on Thursday, smashed her own national record in the 200-metre breaststroke category by setting a time of three minutes and 4.53 seconds, at the 18th FINA World Championships, held in Gwangju, South Korea.
Sajina previously held the record with a time of three minutes and 8.15 seconds at the first-ever South Asian Aquatic Championship in 2016, securing the first silver medal for Maldives in an individual category at an international swimming competition.
Swimmers are currently representing Maldives in two coinciding international sporting events by the two squads competing for the FINA World Championships and the Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG), held at Mauritius.
Alongside national team head coach Ibrahim Moosa and Sajina, Maldives is represented by Aishath Sausan, Ali Imaan and Mubal Azzam Ibrahim.
The establishment of a swimming pool is something many swimmers have been looking forward to, ever since official tournaments started being held in the country. Currently, all practices and tournaments take place at the swimming track in capital city Male's south-side lagoon.
Swimming is a sport in which Maldivians compete at a high level without proper training facilities. Therefore, many sports enthusiasts have been calling for the establishment of proper facilities, especially with the promising performances seen from swimmers in recent history.
However, the successful bid to host the IOIG 2023 will result in the establishment of much-needed facilities in the country.
