This year’s Asian Surfing Championship will be hosted at Kaafu atoll Himmafushi from July 8 to 17.
This marks the first time the championship will be held in three years, with the last event taking place in Japan in 2018. During the 2018 championship, Maldives was represented by Hussain Areef and Ismail Rasheed, who made it to the final heat and secured third and fourth places, respectively.
Following the announcement of the Asian Surfing Championship, the Dhivehi Surf League made changes to its event calendar this year, as the Gaamaadhookolhu Competition, also hosted in Himmafushi, has been brought forward from July to June.
The first competition of the Dhivehi Surf League, the Kalhegalekodaa Competition in Gaafu Dhaalu Gadhdhoo, has already concluded, and the second tournament, the Muleekolhu Raalhugandu Competition held in Meemu Atoll Muli, is scheduled from May 3 to 7.
The third Dhivehi Surf League tournament, the Gaamaadhookolhu Competition is now scheduled from June 14 to 18 which is followed by the Huraakolhu Raalhugandu Competition in Raa atoll Kinolhas from July 26 to 30.
The fifth and final tournament of the league, the Rannamaari Challenge, is scheduled from July 27 to November 5 in Malé City.
In addition to the Asian Surfing Championship, Maldives will be competing in two more international surfing events this year; the World Surfing Games in El Salvador on May 30 and the Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) in Madagascar, scheduled for late August.
The Maldives national surfing team is coached by Africa's Clyde Martin, with a strong winning focus. The team consists of six athletes, including Najaah Mohamed (Kan'bo), Jailam Nizar, Hoodh Ahmed (Hoobz), Ahmed Agil (Ammadey), along with Hussain Areef and Ismail Rasheed, who were selected for the team through this year's selection trials.
