Parliament today, passed a motion to notify the government to allocate flats to applicants according to the original list of recipients published during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration.

The motion was passed by the current Parliament of which the opposition Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) holds majority.

The matter of flat awarding was escalated to the Parliament after members of the public submitted a letter raising concerns over the delay of awarding the 4,000 housing units initiated by the MDP led government.

However, the distribution of apartments was primarily delayed after Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) found major discrepancies in how the points were allocated for applicants. Investigations revealed that over 60 percent of the those who were included in the list of flat recipients did not meet the eligibility criteria for the flats.

After reviewing the complaint, a decision was made within the committee level to handover the flats to the recipients of the original list as promised by incumbent Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

The committee has additionally resolved to allocate the flats to the beneficiaries without making any additions or omissions to the published list.

A vote called on the issue received a unanimous 29 votes in favour of the decision.

The current administration has put together a special committee to review the list of recipients published by the former government, to ensure that flats go to those who rightfully deserve it.

The latest statement by the government on the matter was that the flats would be distributed before construction ends on the apartments.
