The Indian government, on Sunday, extended further leniencies for Maldivians traveling to India despite having its borders closed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid announced that India will grant special consideration for businessmen and students, after meeting with the Indian High Commissioner to Maldives Sunjay Sudhir in the afternoon.

With this development, businessmen and students wishing to travel to India can apply for a permit through the consular department at the Foreign Ministry and facilitate their travels through the travel bubble established between Maldives and India.

Minister Shahid extended his gratitude towards the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as the Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar for the special considerations allowed for Maldivian citizens.

Prior to this, India also allowed travel for those requiring medical treatment under a special permit.
