Preliminary surveys have commenced on the first state-initiated submarine cable project in the Maldives.

Maldives government had contracted Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio for the task.

It was reported earlier that the submarine cable will be connected to the Maldives-IAX (India Asia Express) in the island nation.

The project is carried out by Ocean Connect Maldives (OCM), a subsidiary under Maldives Fund Management Corporation (MFMC).

OCM claims that the project will strengthen the "digital backbone" of the Maldives, as well as speed up the process of digital transformation in the island nation.

Furthermore, OCM also estimates that the project will conclude sometime during the following year.

Meanwhile, OCM has noted that the preliminary surveys before cable installation, will take up a period between four to six months.

However, the company aims to conclude survey works before the estimated time; OCM reported that it aims to complete the preliminary survey tasks within a period of one month.

The survey is carried out by "Ocean Surveyor" vessel, which will reportedly complete its task by 11th April 2022.

The submarine cable will link Maldives directly with Singapore and India while the cables will connect to Hulhumale'.

Moreover, the network will facilitate Singapore to provide direct integrations to Europe without relying on third-party hubs.

OCM predicts the project will greatly enhance consumer cost efficiency ratio, since customers will have to pay comparatively less fees for internet services once the internet service providers are able to facilitate services at lower fares.
