Renowned sport fishing expert and Fly Zone Fishing pioneer Robert "Fly" Navarro has been appointed as the Maldives’ global ambassador to promote the nation as a premier sport fishing tourism destination.
Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) said Navarro's appointment marks a significant step towards attracting international interest in the country’s marine environment and elevating its profile as a sustainable fishing hotspot.
With over 30 years of experience in the industry, Navarro is a seasoned angler who has competed across six continents in some of the world’s most prestigious tournaments. He is also the founder of Fly Zone Fishing and co-creator of the Blue Marlin World Cup, the only global tournament focused exclusively on the blue marlin species.
Known for his role in growing and connecting the angler community through media and events, Navarro’s expertise and international appeal make him a strong fit to represent the Maldives among sport fishing circles worldwide.
His first official appearance as ambassador will be at the Burnuboma Global Fishing Tournament, organized by Visit Maldives. Scheduled from May 2 to 4, the tournament will bring together international anglers to fish in Maldivian waters, targeting species such as marlin, yellowfin tuna, and mahi-mahi.

Beyond the competition, MMPRC plans to collaborate with Fly Navarro and industry stakeholders on activities aimed at positioning the Maldives as a leading sustainable marine tourism destination.
"It's a great honor to represent the Maldives internationally,” Navarro said. “The Maldivian marine environment is one of the most beautiful in the world. When it comes to fishing, there’s no place that compares. I'm excited to help showcase it to the global community.”
As Global Ambassador, Navarro will support Maldives’ visibility through international partnerships, media engagement, and grassroots initiatives within the sport fishing and maritime tourism industry.
