Ali Naseer, a 69 year old resident of Hulhumale', was hit by a speeding motorcycle last Friday night as he was returning home after Tarawih prayers at Masjid Al Rasheed near his residence.

His 22 year old grand daughter heard racing motorcycles, followed by a huge commotion outside, and looked out from the balcony of their house to see her Naseer lying on the ground, seriously injured after being hit by the speeding vehicle.

She rushed down to help, yelling out asking who had hit her grandfather.

The rider of the motorcycle came forward and admitted it was him, after which she asked to wait without leaving the scene. She then notified her father, around which time her mother [Naseer's daughter] had also happened on the scene on her way back from the mosque.

She said that despite a crowd having gathered at the accident scene, no one extended any help to transfer the victim to the hospital.

"Around when my father arrived, a neighbour also came in a van. He asked us to carry Grandfather in to the van quickly. But the people gathered there were saying even then to not carry him. There was a lot of blood," she recalled.

"The ambulance and the police arrived at the scene after mother and father already left to the hospital with my grandfather."

She said that someone had brought her Grandfather's prayer aid chair, as well as his slippers to the accident scene and left it there.

Mohamed Saif, Ali Naseer's son, said that Naseer had a 5 inch gash on his head, with blood having seeped into his brain. He has also sustained injuries to his lungs.

Although initial medical attention was provided at Hulhumale' Hospital, Naseer has since been transferred to the Intensive Care Unit at ADK for further treatment.

"Dr Niyaf just observed father's condition, and told us that bleeding has still not been stopped. He will be under observation for one more day to see if the bleeding can be stopped," he said.

In a post on social media, Saif thanked those who had assisted in transferring his father to the hospital. He also highlighted the unnecessary grief and loss that irresponsible speeding of vehicles caused to many families.

Official details of the accident are unclear yet as police have so far not commented on the matter. It is also unclear whether any arrests have been made in relation.
