Parents have lodged concerns regarding the two buildings of Majeediyya School tilting and detaching apart.

Majeediyya School remains the oldest and largest school in the country with the school having been inaugurated on April 19, 1927, under the name Madhrasathul Salaahiyya. Only three years remain for this school to celebrate a century of operations.

Two more buildings were constructed after beginning teaching operations in the school. The oldest building of this school dates back over 90 years with a new building constructed in 1997. The two buildings were then linked together by affixing metal and concreting it.

A parent of the school, which has over 1,500 students enrolled, shared with Mihaaru News that a crack is always visible on the area connecting the two building when traveling on the staircase. However, a parent revealed that they noticed the crack had expanded and the two building were edging apart nearly a week ago.

"Parents would previously [before Ramadan] climb up the stairs while accompanying the children. Many parents probably haven't noticed this because they do not go upstairs. But I noticed it very clearly," said the parent.

The school has now drawn safety nets around this area and closed it. However, parents maintain that the situation poses a risk to the safety of the students.

"The crack expanded out of the blue. It has increased to approximately three inches. Students of both building use one staircase to travel up and down the floors. Hence, this is a risk to students," said a parent.

Majeediyya School was contacted regarding this concern and the Principal, Aishath Mohamed Solih had requested to approach the Ministry of Education (MoE) to acquire further information on it. The Ministry has not yet divulged any information on the case and no response has been received to inquiries requesting a statement.

However, Minister of Construction and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib stated today that it has been noticed that the newer building of the two has "slightly edged apart". The Minister revealed that upon awareness of the situation, a team from the Ministry had also visited the school and inspected the site.

"We have inspected it after becoming aware of it last Thursday. We are compiling a detailed report on it." said the Minister.

Parents asserted that the two building began tilting apart amid the dewatering procedures to construct TATA flats on Sosun Magu.
