Watermelons from Thoddu are the most prevalent in the markets. Prices of watermelons at present range from MVR 15 to 18 per kilogram.
At the start of Ramadan, watermelon prices were as high as MVR 22 to 25 per kilogram, but they have started to decrease over the past week.
Local market farmers indicate that watermelon prices are expected to remain stable throughout Ramadan, thanks to the abundant supply from various islands.
Most of the watermelons come from Alif Alif Thoddoo, Shaviyani Goidhoo, Thaa Kandoodhoo, and Kaafu Kaashidhoo.
Traders mention that the general price of watermelons typically rises in case of logistical challenges or adverse weather conditions. However, if such issues do not arise, the price will likely remain stable. A large quantity of watermelons has also been imported from India during this Ramadan.
Despite the usual increase in watermelon production during Ramadan, the current market price is lower compared to previous years, where prices could sometimes reach MVR 35 per kilogram.
