Police have said that the autopsy report issued after the post mortem conducted on the body of Adam Athhar has confirmed the cause of death to be hanging.
Athhar died on September 2 while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital after attempting to take his own life while in custody in Dhoonidhoo Prison. He had been arrested for holding a woman hostage at knifepoint.
With questions being raised around the death, Police showed security camera footage from Athhar's cell to reporters in a closed meeting.
They sent Athhar's body to India to conduct a post mortem.
While Police stated that the post mortem confirmed the cause of death as hanging, no further details have been released. Police said that this is because the National Integrity Commission and the Human Rights Commission of Maldives are investigating the matter.
