Maldives Meteorological Service (MET), on Sunday, warned the country of unfavourable weather across the archipelago for the next two days, due to a low-pressure trough present in the region.

According to the MET Office, heavy rains and thunderstorms are to be expected across the archipelago.

In the northern and central atolls, MET calculations indicate gusts of wind travelling up to 40 mph.

Over the next 24 hours, winds in these areas are expected to reach speeds of 13-23 mph while in the southern atolls, windspeed may rise to between 5-15 mph.

Earlier on Sunday, MET issued a white alert spanning from the Haa Atolls to That Atoll, warning sea-bound vessels of strong currents and choppy waters. The white alert ended at 1630 pm on the same day.

Over the above two day period, wave heights are expected to stay between 3 to 6 feet in the northern and central atolls and between 2- 5 feet in the southern region.

The weather experts have also urged islands that usually experience a degree of flooding, especially in the central and northern areas, to remain vigilant.

According to Maldives' indigenous 'Nakaiy' calendar, the current period ‘Mula’, the first segment of the summery ‘’Iruvai’ season, is characterized by strong winds and rough seas.

Monday, 21 December 2020 marks the 12th day of Mula Nakaiy.
