A total of 55,055 tourists have arrived to Maldives in the first two weeks of this year.
Statistics released by the Tourism Ministry show that this is an increase of 52.9 percent compared to the first two weeks of last year. A total of 36,003 tourists arrived in the Maldives during the same period last year. Even though tourist arrivals show an increase when compared to 2021, it is still lower than the total number of arrivals Maldives welcomed in the first two weeks of 2019 and 2020.
While 56,186 tourist arrivals were recorded in 2019, 67,281 tourists were welcomes in 2020. However, this was before the first case of COVID-19 was identified in the Maldives.
Since the coronavirus pandemic had become, Maldives receives the highest number of tourists from India. However in the first two weeks of 2022, the highest number of tourists arrived from Russia, with a total of 11,007 tourists. India is currently ranked fourth highest with 3,021 visitors.
Italy is second on the list of highest tourist arrivals to Maldives while the United Kingdom is third.
Maldives welcomes 1.2 million tourists last year. Therefore Tourism Ministry estimates that a total of two million tourists will visit Maldives in 2022. As this year marks 50 years since tourism was introduced to Maldives, several activities have been planned to celebrate the anniversary.
