Construction of the King Salman Mosque, which was build at an estimated cost of around USD 24 million (MVR 370 million), commenced in 2017 under the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen. Despite being completed within two years, the utilization of the building has been postponed due to various reasons.

The government of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was also criticized by the public for the delay in opening of the mosque.

The previous administration had engaged in discussions with the Saudi government regarding the official opening of the mosque. A delegation from Saudi Arabia also visited Maldives for these talks. However, the mosque has yet to be opened due to a subsequent unclear issue.
