The trial of Pakistani chef Mohamad Abid, accused of assaulting and killing a Bangladeshi colleague at a restaurant in Hulhumale', has reached its final hearing.

Abid, a chef at Khanji Restaurant in Hulhumale', was charged with intentional homicide using a sharp object in connection with the stabbing of his colleague during Ramadan on April 16, 2022.

During the Criminal Court hearing, the prosecution said that in the instance Abid cannot be convicted of this charge against him, then the Court proceed to convict him of any other charges that can be proven.

Abid's defense counsel objected, noting that today's hearing was scheduled to present a summary statement, and the prosecution had not previously mentioned raising any other charges. The defense asked for time to respond to this new development.

Justice Ismail Shafeeu stated that a hearing would be held on Saturday to discuss the matter and submit a summary statement. If no further clarification is needed after the summary statement, a verdict will be handed down.

Justice Shafeeu highlighted that this case has progressed quickly, with the Criminal Court taking testimonies at a record pace for a murder case, despite some hearings being canceled due to building constraints and requests from lawyers.
