State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has urged people to be extra cautious in their use of electricity in the Male' area, due to the unusually hot weather coinciding with the month of Ramadan.

Managing Director of STELCO, Hussain Fahmy, said in a post on X today that the Maldives is currently experiencing the hottest period of the year, according to the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET).

He also urged people to be vigilant about their electricity consumption during this period, noting that electricity usage tends to increase during the month of Ramadan compared to other months.

STELCO said that while the usual daily power consumption in the Male' area is around 94 megawatts, electricity usage has surged to 104.7 megawatts in recent days.

"Therefore, to minimize expenditure on electricity, it is advisable to consume only what is necessary and pay special attention to conserving electricity during this period," he said.

According to data shared by MET, the highest temperature recorded this year was 42 degrees Celsius. During last year's hottest period, the maximum "feels-like" temperature in the Male' region soared to 45 degrees Celsius.

As this year is an El Niño year, temperatures are expected to rise even further, according to global weather agencies.

According to MET, the maximum temperature of the day is expected to occur around 14:00 hrs.
