Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) CEO Mohamed Wajeeh has released a graphic indicating that the highest number of goods ever imported into the Maldives occurred under the current administration of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
According to the graphic posted on his Facebook account, Mohamed Wajeeh reported that 12,600 tonnes were imported as general cargo and 5,375 tonnes as container cargo.
The figures released up to August 2024 show an increase compared to the previous year. General cargo imports have risen by 22 percent, while container imports have grown by four percent.
MPL statistics reveal that the number of containers imported so far this year has increased by three percent compared to 2018, while general cargo imports have risen by 35 percent.
Wajeeh stated that the amount of goods imported into the Maldives in the last nine months is the highest increase in the country's history.
"This shows that the Maldivian economy has begun to see improvements since Dr Muizzu assumed the presidency," he said.
He added that since this administration came to power, it is now preparing to launch important projects that will further boost the economy and enhance the financial sustainability of the Maldivian people.
Central Bank Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) statistics revealed that during the first seven months of this year, goods worth USD 2 billion were imported into the country.
