At the request of the Palestinian government, Maldives is preparing to deliver an oral statement on their behalf to the ICJ on the 26th of this month.
Foreign Minister, Moosa Zameer stated that upon the request of the Palestinian government, Maldives has been preparing to deliver a statement on behalf of the Palestinian people to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
In relation to the resolution proposed to the parliament by the Vilingili Constituency member Saud Hussain calling the for the Independency of the Palestinian State and ceasing the inhumane attacks led by Israel against the Palestinian people, Minister Zameer was summoned to the Foreign Relations Committee today.
In the statement delivered to the Committee, Minister Zameer said that Maldives is engaging in the case of the UN General Assembly (UNGA)'S request for preferential advice by the ICJ about legal questions regarding Israel’s conduct on the lands they have seized among which East Jerusalem is included.
“Subsequently, upon the request of the Palestinian government, Maldives had submitted a written statement to ICJ on the date 25th July 2023 and with the ICJ’s scheduling for an oral statement by Maldives on the date 26th February 2024, the Maldivian government has been performing the necessary preparations for this,” Zameer stated.
The Minister also highlighted that Maldives had intervened in the case against Israel submitted to the ICJ by South Africa and has been working to ensure the rights of the Palestinian people.
The assurance that the President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration offers is that Maldives will remain committed to supporting Palestine, he said. Zameer further detailed that Maldives is in approval of a two-state solution and that the belief for the two countries’ separation border is the pre-1967 border, seen prior to Israel’s forceful invasion of Palestine.
As the Minister asserted, Maldives’ stand is that Palestine must have a secure independent domain and that this domain must be privy to all the rights of a state.
“The position we bear is the same common position as that of the Palestinian government, Arab countries and many additional countries and associations. This position for the 1967 border is the position that almost all sympathizers of Palestine has adopted,” said Zameer.
“We believe that Israel, too, can co-exist. In this common position, it is believed Israel must retain their rights, however, Palestine must also be granted their country’s rights and the two must be able to co-exist as two separate countries.”
