The Cabinet has decided to establish a Maldivian embassy in Turkey.

During a press conference held at the President's Office last evening, Under Secretary of Public Policy Mohamed Firzul stated that the decision to open the embassy was part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's discussions during his first official visit abroad to Turkey since assuming office.

Firzul stated that the embassy will be opened in the Turkish capital, Ankara.

"In his decision to open an embassy in Turkey, he has emphasized crucial factors. One of them is to further strengthen the longstanding political relations between Maldives and Turkey and take them to a new level," he said.

According to the President's Office, the decision was made due to the Maldives importing many essential daily use goods and other items from Turkey and to encourage Turkish investment in the Maldives and export Maldivian goods.

During President Muizzu's visit to Turkey, he also signed a trade agreement with the Turkish government.

The President's Office stated that a significant number of Maldivian students pursue higher education in Turkey, and the decision is also influenced by the rapid increase in the number of Maldivian tourists visiting Turkey.

Maldives established diplomatic relations with Turkey on May 28, 1979.
