Addu City Council revealed on Wednesday that the sewerage system established across the four linked districts of Addu would be completed and ready for use by September.

According to a social media post by the Council, Ministry of Environment and project contractors extended their guarantee during a meeting, that the sewerage system would be completed by that time.

Work began to establish the sewerage system in Addu during former President Mohamed Nasheed's administration, with foreign company Bywater contracted for the project.

With Nasheed's administration coming to an end in February 7, 2012, however, the project was halted and eventually the contract with Bywater voided.

The Addu sewerage system project resumed during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration in April 2017, with the aid of OPEC Fund. The project was initiated with plans estimating completion in 2018.

Of the linked districts of Addu, sewerage work for Hithadhoo was contracted to Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) while the sewerage systems for Maradhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo and Feydhoo were contracted to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

Additionally, the sewerage system for Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo were contracted to Sri Lankan company Sierra Construction Pvt Ltd.

The lack of a working sewerage system is one of the challenges faced by the major population that resides in Addu City.
