Parliament today approved the appointment of former Election Commission (EC) President Fuad Thaufeeq as the Ambassador of Maldives to Thailand.

Fuad’s term as EC President expired on November 23, and his name was submitted to Parliament for consideration as Maldives Ambassador to Thailand on November 25.

The Foreign Relations Committee of Parliament reviewed the matter and decided to approve Fuad's appointment. During today’s parliament sitting, Fuad was approved with a majority vote of 58 members.

Fuad resigned from the Elections Commission after completing two terms. The law limits members to a maximum of two terms.

He was appointed to the position in November 2019 for his second term.

With extensive experience in elections since 1978, Fuad has played a key role in various elections.

Following the adoption of the new constitution, he was first a member of the Transitional Commission before serving as President of the Election Commission. Fuad held the presidency from November 2009 to March 2014, and was re-elected to the commission for a second term in September 2021.
