President Muizzu has congratulated Iran's new president-elect, Masoud Pezeshkian in a social media post, wishing success on his endeavors to promote peace and expressing hope of fortifying relations between Maldives and Iran.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has congratulated Masoud Pezeshkian, the newly elected Iranian President who won the Iranian presidential election held on June 28th.
In a post on social platform X, President Muizzu commended the president-elect and expressed hope of working together to strengthen relations between the two countries.
In the message, the President also wished Pezeshkian success on his efforts to establish peace and prosperity within Iran and the Middle East as well.
The Iranian presidential election held on June 18 to appoint a new country leader came after the death of their 63-year-old ultraconservative President Ebrahim Raisi on May 19. His death occurred after his helicopter crashed a day earlier in a remote and fog-shrouded western mountain region while traveling back from East Azerbaijan province, where he had inaugurated a dam project.
Pezeshkian was able to secure the election this year after contending with six presidential candidates and advancing to a second round of polls.
The reformist candidate was able to amass 53.7 percent of the votes during the the last round, defeating Saeed Jalili who was able to collect 44.3 percent votes in the run-off.
The 69-year-old president-elect is a heart surgeon who advocates improving ties with the West to establish a strong relationship and alleviate the country's long isolation in the international community. His contender, the 58-year-old Jalili, served as Iran's top nuclear negotiator from 2007 to 2013 and is widely recognized for his steadfast anti-Western stance.
