The state budget spent MVR 272 million on the individual pension schemes of these institutions this year. Last year, MVR 266 million was spent on double pensions. Over the past five years, the double pension has increased by MVR 70 million.
The parliament's public accounts committee has decided to meet all institutions which issue double pensions over the next week.
The committee's decision was made on Wednesday to seek more information regarding the matter.
According to the government, the biggest challenges in running the pension system are the schemes designed by independent agencies to encourage "early retirement".
According to reports, thirteen government agencies offer double pensions. They include the police, MNDF, Customs, the judiciary, The President's Office, ACC and the Elections Commission.
