MP Jabir propose Senior Citizen Allowance of MVR 10,000

Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir on Tuesday, submitted a bill to the Parliament, proposing to increase the Senior Citizen Allowance to MVR 10,000.

Additionally, the MP is seeking to raise the government funded Single Parent Allowance and Foster Parent Allowance to MVR 7,500.

As of now, citizens of over 65 years of age receive a monthly allowance of MVR 5,000, while single parents and foster parents looking after a child below 18 years of age and meet the required criteria obtain a monthly allowance of MVR 2,000.

According to the motion forwarded by Jabir, detailing the reason for his proposal, the proposal aims to build a healthier generation by overcoming unfair situations faced by parents and children due to broken families.

Jabir further stated that it will aid in building a favourable environment for senior citizens in society, so they could lead a dignified and repectable life.

The Kaashidhoo lawmaker also made a submission to the parliamentary Committee on Secondary Legislation to resume issuing a quota on alcohol and pork meat for foreigners working in professional positions in the operative, financial and industrial areas. He presented a letter to Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed requesting to amend the regulations to issue this quota under Maldives Customs Services and Ministry of Economic Affairs.
