The Maldives has welcomed its first tourist of the New Year, a British citizen named Georgina Holbrook.

Holbrook arrived on Fly Dubai, landing at the Maldives’ main gateway Velana International Airport on Monday. She was chosen as the first visitor of the year as she was the first to be issued a VISA at the Immigration counter.

Georgina Holbrook, who was on her sixth visit to the Maldives, was invited to the VIP lounge where the acting managing director of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), Haris Mohamed, gave her a warm welcome, along with officials of the tourism ministry and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).

She was presented with a certificate stating that she was the first tourist to visit the Maldives in 2018. She was also presented a gift and a special seven-day holiday package, inclusive of all domestic flights, by Furaveri Island Resort.

MMPRC stated that a total of 94,258 tourists from the UK had visited the Maldives by November 2017, which was a 1.1 percent increase compared to the same period in 2016. The first tourist to visit the Maldives last year was Katie Holmes, also a British citizen.

A total of 1.4 million tourists had visited the Maldives in 2017, which is an eight percent increase compared to the previous year.
