The mother of the newborn found in a garbage dump in Alif Dhaal atoll Dhigurah has been detained at Velana International Airport.
Police have confirmed to 'Mihaaru News' that the woman has been detained at the airport.
It has been revealed that a Sri Lankan national who worked at a guest house in Dhigurah had given birth to the child. The baby was discovered in a black trash bag used for garbage collection.
The body of the baby, who was found in the waste disposal area, is now at the island's health center.
The incident was reported to the police around 9:20 am. this morning. Following an examination by a doctor, the child was pronounced deceased, according to the police.
A police team has also been dispatched to the island to investigate the case.
Ibrahim Usman, President of the island council, told 'Mihaaru News' that the baby was discovered at around 8 am when an employee at the island's waste disposal facility was at work.
He added that the baby was discovered from one of the trash bags collected from Dhigurah residences and guesthouses, although the exact location from where the bag had been collected has not been ascertained.
Usman further highlighted that the newborn was discovered while the waste management employees were attempting to discard garbage at the waste disposal site.
