Maldives records 100,000 Covid cases

Maldives recorded an additional 816 Covid cases within a 24 hour period on Thursday, increasing the total cases to over 100,000.

As of 6 pm on Thursday, Maldives has 100,451 confirmed Covid-19 cases.

One of the reasons it is likely the positive cases has increased is due to the increased testing as well. According to Health Protection Agency’s (HPA) daily statistics, 7,005 samples were tested on Thursday. This is the highest number of cases processed within a twenty four hour period within the last year or so.

The new 816 cases mean the daily positivity rate is now at 11.65 percent.

HPA said 413 of the positive cases were from the Greater Male’ Area, while 249 cases were recorded from various administrative islands. An additional 92 cases were from operational resorts, and 15 cases were from safaris and liveaboards.

The positivity rate in Male’ alone has been over 12 percent within the last 24 hours.

Over the past two years, Maldives have seen 95,056 people recover from Covid-19. Two hundred and sixty four people died. Currently there are 5,118 active Covid cases. There are 25 people admitted in medical facilities due to Covid these days.

Maldives is also observing a surge in Covid cases due to the highly contagious Omicron variant.

HPA has implemented travel restrictions and banned mass gatherings with more than 50 people in order to curb the spread.
