Health Protection Agency (HPA), on Tuesday, placed island-atoll Fuvahmulah under monitoring, after two random samples collected from the island on Sunday tested positive for COVID-19.

According to Fuvahmulah Hospital, most of the random samples were taken from individuals who are exposed to a large number of people, and therefore, two of them testing positive for the virus increases the chances of a community spread already being present on the island.

Although Fuvahmulah had formerly recorded some COVID-19 cases, there was no fear of a community spread, since all of the patients had tested positive from home quarantine.

The island’s hospital is now conducting the contact tracing process for the positive cases, in order to confirm whether a community spread is present.

With this development, it is now prohibited to travel to and from the island, which hosts a population of approximately 13,000 people.

After a long period of recording low numbers towards the end of 2020, Maldives is now experiencing its third wave of the pandemic, with the introduction of the United Kingdom’s highly contagious virus variant.

Currently, the island nation records a total of 16,909 virus cases of which 2,075 are active cases, in addition to 14,772 recoveries and 56 deaths.
