Indian External Affairs Minister make landfall, signs treaty

Indian Minister of External Affairs Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, on Tuesday, arrived in Maldives to take part in the 4th Indian Ocean Conference (IOC) held at Paradise Island Resort.

The arrival marks the first visit to Maldives by the recent successor to late Sushma Swaraj.

During the visit, India agreed to extend aid in investigating and prosecuting criminal matters by signing a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT).

Furthermore, Minister Dr Jaishankar met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid and reviewed the progress of commitments made during the State Visits of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The conference is organized by the India Foundation in association with the Foreign Service Institute of Maldives and S.Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore.

This year's theme for IOC is "Securing the Indian Ocean region: Traditional and Non-Traditional Challenges".

In this conference chaired by Sri Lankan Prime Minister Wickremesinghe, delegates from over 40 countries including members of parliament, personal armed forces, ambassadors, senior diplomats, senior bureaucrats, prominent authors, academicians and media personnel will attend the conference.
