The Industrial Village, which has been filled with trash for a long time now, has been entirely cleaned and security personnel have been employed to patrol the area.

Male' Mayor Adam Azim told Mihaaru that it has become commonplace for pickups, vans, cars and other vehicles to enter the Industrial Village and discard trash in the area.

The Male' City Council, together with Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), Wamco and Police, initiated a clean up of the entire premises last Friday, and will continue the efforts until the area is completely cleaned.

The vehicles parked inside the Industrial Village are heavy vehicles of MPL, kept their with authorization from the City Council.

Old and decrepit vehicles in the area are being removed, Azim said.

The City Council plans on gating the Industrial Village in the near future. However, even though the gates have not been fixed yet, security details are already in place, with council and MPL staff patrolling the area for security.

"Only those with permits can enter the Industrial Village in their vehicles from now on. However, pedestrians can enter and exit the place freely. The purpose is to bring an end to trash being discarded in the Industrial Village," Azim said.

"Security will be monitored around the clock at the Industrial Village from now on."

Azim stated that the area remaining as a junkyard contributed to the spread of diseases, and is also a safety hazard to those working in the area. Although the area is being used for industrial work, it is unacceptable for it to stay unclean and full of trash, Azim said.
