Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on late Sunday said that the terrorist attacks on several regions of Sri Lanka on April 21 were absolutely unacceptable and that the party is ready to aid in relief efforts to the country.
MDP issued a statement condemning the attacks in several churches and hotels in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, as premeditated inhuman acts of terrorism.
According to MDP, inhumane acts alike to attacking such places of worship would generate spite and enmity between one group to another and dispel peace in society, and it is a threat to the protection, preservation and the peaceful nature of the Indian Ocean.
The party said that it is participating in mourning the tragedy that befell Sri Lanka and its citizens. MDP noted that Sri Lanka is a neighbouring country frequented by Maldivians, and its people have always held a strong bond with locals.
MDP concluded the statement, “This low, uncivilised and cowardly act is one that this party condemns, no matter the perpetrators nor their cause".
There were over 290 casualties and almost 500 were injured in the bombings of eight locations in Lanka. While the Sri Lankan administration invoked a curfew for its citizens in response, no Maldivians were injured in the terrorist attacks.
Sri Lankan administration said that 13 people were arrested in relation to the attacks. The government of Sri Lanka confirmed that most of the attacks were suicide bombings, and they alleged that one specific group was behind the assaults.
