High Court delayed sentencing on former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s appeal of Criminal Court's order to freeze his bank accounts.

The High Court revealed that the scheduled hearing for appeal was cancelled due to administrative reasons, but no further details were disclosed.

The hearings fo the case are conducted confidentially.

Maldives Police Service had previously stated that within the past five years, copious amounts of money were deposited to the accounts of the former President. They also revealed that large transactions were made using these accounts.

Furthermore, the police iterated that the money in the accounts amounting to more than MVR 100 million were frozen for investigation.

The frozen accounts were Yameen’s Bank of Maldives (BML) and Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) accounts.

Yameen’s team of lawyers alleged that his accounts were “selectively frozen” with political motivations to influence the upcoming Parliament Elections.

Currently, Yameen is kept in detention at Maafushi Prison, following Criminal Court orders.
