Parliament approves nominations for three ambassadors

The parliament on Tuesday passed three ambassador nominations made by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The nominations were Ambassador to Thaliand Mohamed Jinah, Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Mohamed Haleel and Ambassador to China Aishath Azima.

The envoys were approved unanimously by the 36 lawmakers present at the sitting.

In a meeting held December 13, 2018, the parliament's special committee had rejected the posting of Mohamed Jinah as Ambassador to Thailand and Mohamed Haleel as Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. Ambassador to China Aishath Azeema, however, received the committee's approval.

Nonetheless, the previously rejected nominations for Jinah and Haleel were approved in a meeting held on February 24, by a majority vote of the six members present in the meeting

Jinah previously served as a draftsman trainee at the Public Works Services. Furthermore, he was the former General Manager of Green Paradise Group.

Haleel had served in high ranking posts of the government. He was appointed as the Ambassador to Singapore during President Nasheed’s administration.

Moreover, Haleel was a board member of Maldives Ports Authority and Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO). He is the younger brother of State Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Haleel.

The Ambassador to Thailand, Aishath Azima, also held eminent positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Finance. She had also served in the Indian High Commission.

Currently, a total of 11 ambassadors are approved by the parliament:

1. Thilmeeza Hussain - Ambassador to the United States of America and the United Nations

2. Hassan Sobir - Ambassador to Brussels

3. Aishath Mohamed Didi - Ambassador to India

4. Umar Abdul Razzaq - Ambassador to Sri Lanka

5. Dr Abdulla Mausoom - Ambassador to Singapore

6. Ahmed Latheef - Ambassador to Germany

7. Dr Farahanaaz Faisal - Ambassador to the United Kingdom

8. Wisam Ali - Ambassador to Malaysia

9. Mohamed Jinah- The Ambassador to Thaliand

10. Mohamed Haleel- Ambassador to Saudi

11. Aishath Azima - Ambassador to China
