Parliament rejects 2 ambassador nominations

The Parliament's Committee on National Security, on Thursday, rejected two ambassador nominations proposed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The Parliament's special committee rejected the posting of Mohamed Jinah as Ambassador to Thailand and Mohamed Haleel as Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. However, Ambassador to China Aishath Azeema received the committee's approval.

Ibrahim Shareef, the parliamentarian for the constituency of Maradhoo, Addu Atoll, led the vote against the two candidates while the constituent for Vaikaradhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Mohamed Nazim, backed Shareef in his decision.

Per the final vote count, the two nominees received votes of disapproval from the committee members comprising of MP for Thoddoo, Alif Alif Atoll, Ibrahim Hassan and Hoarafushi MP Mohamed Ismail, along with Shareef and Nazim.

Opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)'s Parliamentarian for Kelaa, Haa Alif Atoll, Ali Arif and Mahibadhoo, Alif Dhaal constituent Ahmed Thoriq, voted in favour of the two candidates.

Although the Committee rejected Jinah and Haleel, their names have been forwarded to the Parliament floor for a final decision set to take place on Saturday.

The Parliament has approved of appointing eight of President Solih's nominations as foreign diplomats.

2. Hassan Sobir - Ambassador to Brussels

3. Aishath Mohamed Didi - Ambassador to India

4. Umar Abdul Razzaq - Ambassador to Sri Lanka

5. Dr. Abdulla Mausoom - Ambassador to Singapore

6. Ahmed Latheef - Ambassador to Germany

7. Dr. Farahanaaz Faisal - Ambassador to the United Kingdom

8. Wisam Ali - Ambassador to Malaysia
