Local young athlete Aminath Jaisha has smashed the 8 year long women's 1500 metre-run national record.

The young star broke the record at the Asian Games last Thursday, by a record time of 5 minutes and 14 seconds, as compared to the previous record holder of 5 minutes and 16 seconds by Athlete Mariyam Inaya Farooq during the world junior championship in 2010.

Among the 20 participants who ran in the 1500 metre rally, Jaisha finished 18th in the rally.

Jaisha ran in the preliminary 800 metre rally, however, did not qualify for the following round with a record time of 2 minutes and 34 seconds.

Aishath Himaan Hassan, who ran in the preliminary stages of the 200 and 400 metre rallies, finished the two races in 26.73 seconds and 1:00.59 minutes respectively. Himaan did not proceed forward in these two events. The highlight of the games for Maldives, was the success of Hassan Saaid. Saaid competed in the 100 metre rally, in which he progressed to the semi finals.

As unfortunate as it was for the country, Marathon participant, Shifaz Mohamed had prematurely run out of the event due to chest pains after he had journeyed more than half of the marathon.
