Ministry of Health probes death of elderly woman due to lack of oxygen

The Ministry of Health has initiated investigations into a concerning an incident involving the passing of an elderly woman from Kinbidhoo while on the way to Thaa atoll Thimarafushi Airport. She was to be transported to Male' for further treatment. It has been alleged that the ambulance transporting her lacked working oxygen cylinders.

The woman was initially taken to Veymandoo for treatment. However, it was determined that she required further medical attention in Male'. She was them immediately transferred to Thimarafushi.

A source close to the family told Mihaaru News that the woman was transported from Veymandoo Hospital to Thimarafushi by sea ambulance and had received oxygen during the trip. However, upon reaching the airport, the 74-year-old woman began shivering, which led to attempts at changing her oxygen supply.

"She was taken to the airport by the Thimarafushi ambulance. But when she started shivering, attempts were made to change the oxygen to the one in the ambulance. However, it did not work," he said.

"She died of oxygen deprivation due to negligence."

Manager of Veymandoo Hospital, Hassan Ziyad said that a team had been dispatched to the scene to investigate the alleged death by negligence. He said that information would be shared once the investigation is concluded.

The Ministry of Health said today that it is investigating the case.
