President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu called for a halt to Israeli attacks, describing UN Security Council resolution adopted on Friday, demanding increased humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza, is a step in the right direction.

In response to the resolution, President Muizzu said on X, that the Palestinians were facing Israeli attacks continuously and did not believe that aid could be delivered safely in the middle of the attacks.

President Dr. Muizzu called for stronger and more concrete steps to immediately end all hostilities and guarantee the rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination.

The Security Council on Friday adopted a resolution without the original plea for an “urgent suspension of hostilities” between Israel and Hamas.

The resolution has been criticized by many countries as "meaningless" since it does not explicitly call for an end to Israeli attacks.

The resolution calls for the UN to monitor the transport of humanitarian supplies into Gaza during the ceasefire. Humanitarian supplies to Gaza will be provided by other countries not involved in the ongoing conflict, and the UN must inform Israel and the Palestinian government of the full details of how aid supplies are being imported into Gaza, according to the resolution.

Previous UN Security Council resolutions calling for a ceasefire in Gaza have also failed, with the United States, Britain, and Russia exercising their veto power. A resolution in the Security Council must be passed without a veto by one of the five permanent members and with the support of at least nine members.

Israeli forces initiated their attack on Gaza in response to Hamas's attacks on Israeli Jewish settlements on October 7, 2023. The attacks by resulted in the death of 1,147 people and the taking of more than 240 hostages.

While it has been 73 days since Israel began attacks against Gaza, which started on October 7, the conflict has claimed the lives of more than 20,000 people. More than two-thirds of the casualties are women and children.
