Maldives Ports Ltd (MPL)'s Managing Director Shahid Ali declared Sunday that the company was investigating the recent tragic accident at the Male' Commercial Harbour that killed a worker.

Abdulla Asim, aged 27 from Landhoo, Noonu Atoll, on Saturday succumbed to severe injuries sustained when a glass pallet fell on him. The incident occurred on January 7, while Asim and a co-worker were inside a cargo container, helping to unload glass pallets with a forklift when one of the pallets toppled onto them, trapping Asim beneath the shattered glass sheet.

According to local media reports, he had been transferred to a ward at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) when he showed some improvement. However, he was later rushed to Intensive Care again when his conditioned worsened.

MPL's MD Shahid stated that the company would make any necessary changes identified during the probe.

In his remarks, Shahid admitted that MPL faced many challenges in strengthening safety measures at the commercial harbour due to lack of space, which forces workers to clear cargo containers within the area they are unloaded from freighters.

He noted that MPL would be able to enforce full safety measures at the commercial harbour currently being developed at Gulhifalhu.

However, he assured that the company was familiarising its staff and labourers with the precautions in place at the current port, including holding awareness programmes.

There have been intermittent reports of dangerous accidents at the Male' Commercial Harbour. The latest such incident took place in September 2017, when an MPL staff's leg was caught in a container while loading cargo containers to a freighter vessel, resulting in amputation.
