Male' City Council and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) on Sunday, commenced work to disinfect the streets of capital city Male' as well as reclaimed suburb Hulhumale' as part of their efforts to curb the potential spread of COVID-19.
MNDF began by first disinfecting 'Kanbaa Aisa Rani Higun' and are presently set to move towards 'Boduthakurufaanu Magu' the ring road of Male'.
Prior to the operation's commencement, Male' City Mayor Shifa Mohamed said that fire engines will be utilized for the operation as well, adding that 'safe' chlorine solution would be used to prevent vehicle damage.
Authorities expect to conclude their disinfection of Male' and Hulhumale' over the course of two days.
Experts say that in order to stop a virus from spreading and prevent healthcare systems from reaching maximum capacity, the most important precautions are being vigilant in observing good hygiene, maintaining herd immunity by social distancing and following guidelines publicized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Health Protection Agency (HPA).
Maldives now has 13 confirmed and eight active cases of COVID-19. The country recorded its first two recoveries on March 20, and the third on March 21. No Maldivians have tested positive for the virus as of yet. So far, only tourists and resort employees have confirmed infections with no local transmissions.
The World Health Organization has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The novel coronavirus has infected more than 345,200 and claimed over 14,900 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 99,500 have recovered.
