Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla stated on Tuesday that space limitations in prisons will be largely solved by the end of 2020.

Speaking at the ceremony held to hand over documents to parole officers, Minister Imran stated that Maldives Police Service was currently holding some detainees that should be under the surveillance of Maldives Correctional Services.

He noted that this should not be the case but space limitations at Maldives Correctional Services did not leave much choice.

According to the minister, corrections had the capacity to hold a maximum of 1300 detainees. However, prisons were already holding approximately 2000 convicts.

He highlighted the accomplishments of 2019, stating that cells that can hold up to 180 detainees were repaired and restored to a usable state. Moreover, he added that a detention facility designated for foreigners, with a capacity of 60, was established in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale'.

"Next year, god willing, we will commence establishing a prison in Neykurendhoo", Minister Imran said.

He assured that the state is devising methods to solve the concerning issue that has persisted for over a decade.
