Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Male' Mayoral candidate Adam Azim, who won today's election by a large margin, said that the win is a win for all residents of Male'.

Speaking to Mihaaru News, Azim said that the win signifies that Male' residents want to move to an island connected to the capital via a bridge.

He expressed gratitude towards those who support him and voted for him in today's election. He also thanked MDP's leadership and campaign teams.

Even during his campaign rallies, Azim claimed that the incumbent government's Fushidhiggarufalhu (Rasmale') project is unneeded at the moment, appealing to those who did not want to move there to vote for him.

He said then that Male' residents must be able to go home through crossing a bridge, and not the seas. Fushidhiggarufalhu is located a 17 minute boat ride away from the Maldives. The authorities have stated before that the conditions and distance between Male' and Fushidhiggarufalhu will not allow the construction of a bridge.

Azim said that MDP's policy is to establish basic necessities in the lands the government has begun reclaiming for housing and to facilitate residence in those locations.

Azim said that funds spent to develop Fushidhiggarufalhu would amount to a waste, indicating that those funds can be put to better use by contributing towards development of the lands already reclaimed.

During his campaign, Azim pledged to ensure those who were selected to receive land plots during the previous administration are granted the land plots as promised. He has also called on the government to issue flats to those who were included in the recipient's list.

As per the temporary results of today's election, Azim won by a distinct margin, with his closest opponent, ruling People's National Congress (PNC) candidate Azima Shakoor being behind him by 2002 votes.
