The Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has announced that it will start awarding land plots to Malé citizens through their land ownership scheme, Binveriyaa, in March.

Under the program, 1,000 land plots will be awarded to Malé citizens. The smallest land plot will be 1,250 square feet. The housing ministry started cleaning up the area allocated for this on Thursday.

Speaking to journalists at the land allotment area in Hulhumalé, Senior Executive Director of the Ministry of Housing, Mohamed Arif said that Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has allocated 1.2 million square feet of land for the residents of Malé City.

"These lands have been divided into 62 areas. As there is a lot of development going on in Hulhumalé, some land have been allocated for storage purposes," Arif said.

"We are targeting that by the time the evaluation process is over, the list will be made public in March. Once the list is made public, efforts are being made to clear these 60 areas so that the land can be handed over immediately."

He added that considering the progress of the land clearing process, a final list from the land and flat owner schemes will also be made public in March.

Managing Director of HDC Ahmed Atif said that providing land to the people of Malé City is an important task to solve the housing problem in the Malé area.

He said that the land cleaning work which started on Thursday would be finished within two weeks.

The other area where land will be given to the people of Malé area is from the land reclaimed in Gulhifalhu. The government opened the application process to apply for 2,000 land plots and 4,000 flats in June of last year.

The ministry had previously said that 35,861 applications had been received for land plots and flats under these schemes. Of these, 15,164 had applied for land allotted free of cost in the capital.

If family members make a joint application for the land plot, 400 square feet is allocated for every additional member until 4,000 square feet is reached.
