The island of Kudagiri, situated in Kaafu Atoll Gulhifalhu which is under development as a picnic island island for residents of the crowded Greater Male' area, is set to open next month for public use.

Minister of State for National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Akram Kamaludeen announced the island is set to be opened as a picnic island next month. It was originally scheduled to open on the Independence day of this year.

However, as Kudagiri was developed by dredging, it took time to plant trees and install proper facilities on the island.

Kudagiri has been developed as a picnic island for families to spend time together in comfort. According to the Planning Ministry, the arrangements on the island will be based on a modern and eco-friendly concept.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had pledged to provide a picnic island for the people living in the Greater Male' region. An area was reserved initially from the Emboodhoo lagoon with an approximate 3.3 hectares of land to be utilised, but later the government decided to develop the island of Kudagiri as a picnic spot.

Kudagiri is 10.5 km from the capital city of Male' and takes about 15 minutes by speed boat. The site was planned to be dredged with a 1.5 hectare sandbank attached to the island.

A mosque and building providing basic amenities have also been constructed in the island in addition to istallation of electricity and water supply services.

Previously, the island of Kuda Bandos was designated as a picnic island for residents of Male area. However, the government later decided to develop the island as a tourist resort.
