The Maldivian Special Olympics team, who achieved several wins at the recently held Special Olympics World Games in Germany, received a warm welcome upon returning home.

A special ceremony was held at the official pier of Malé City to welcome the athletes. The ceremony was attended by cabinet ministers and other senior government officials.

Upon their arrival at the jetty, the athletes were given a warm welcome and were then escorted to the President's Office, where President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and First Lady Fazna Ahmed personally greeted them.

Local athletes who participated in the Special Olympics World Games, held from June 17 to 25, achieved remarkable success by winning two gold medals and one bronze medal. Aishath Laika Hussain brought home a gold medal in the 100-meter sprint, while Aishath Maniya secured another gold medal for Maldives in the badminton event.

Maniya achieved a two set win against Bulgaria’s Tianka Georgiva in the badminton finals on June 24. She secured her win with scores of 19-21 and 10-21 in the two sets.

Maldivian sprinter Zana Ali Shareef secured a bronze medal in the final event of the 100-meter sprint.

The gold medals won at this year’s Olympics World Games is the third such win at an official Olympics World Games since the Maldives began competing in them. The first gold medal for the Maldives was secured at the 2019 Abu Dhabi World Games by Shifna Ibrahim in the 100-meter sprint.
