Maldives Police Service revealed on Tuesday that the sexual abuse of a woman with special needs aged 30, was reported to the authorities from an island in the north.

The report was filed around 1930hrs of February 3, at the Upper North Police Division, consisting of the atolls of Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu and Shaviyani.

Police are currently investigating the matter, although no arrests have been made as of yet.

The government first came under fire this year after a case involving the sexual abuse of a 21-month old girl in Kanduhulhudhoo, Gaafu Alif Atoll surfaced in mid-January. Public sentiment has remained focused on the prevalence of the issue as well as the state's failure to effectively deal with such cases.

Although reports of rape and sexual violence have spiked in the wake of the Kanduhulhudhoo case, authorities have yet to confirm any convictions against suspects apprehended in relation to these crimes.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih also highlighted the urgency of curbing the issue during his presidential address in the parliament's 2020 inaugural session.
